While Shaun Miller waited for the scores on freestyle, Kirt Voreis said that it was crazy. At least 4.6 meters in the air. It was so difficult that you almost fell over the bike.
Although Kirt was impressed by the jump, it was his riding that earned him a perfect score. Voreis impressed them with his bar spin from the top drop, and 360 off the bottom double.
Roger Hurd was also setting up the Romic race caravan while this was happening. Southridge also held open downhill practice. Romic was on hand for suspension tuning for the entire day. Between the Downhill Freestyle, Short Track and Eric Carter events, April Lawyer, Lisa Cher, and Todd Leduc were all out practicing runs. It was a mini-national!
STAR STUDDED FIELD
Imagine yourself facing Tinker after you have completed 52 miles of racing and climbed for 3,352.8m. Mike Lee didn’t just think about it but he actually did it! The annual Vision Quest event gives riders a taste of some of the most exciting riding in Irvine, Laguna Canyon, and the surrounding areas. Lee was also already a cracker before the Southridge XC started. Mike was unable to match Tinker’s smoking fast time. He finished seven minutes slower than Tinker, and 2 1/2 minutes faster than his best time on this long course.
It was a hard downhill. Eric Carter, Downhill National Champion, was the winner. He will be remembered as the first rider ever to end David Klaassen Van Oorschots winning streak. On the new course, Carter was beaten by only three riders: ex-champion Todd Leduc, Colin Bailey, and David K.
EPILOGUE
All this was taking place at Southridge. Alison Dunlap, National Champion and just 15 miles south of Southridge was racing in the final event of the four-day Pomona Valley Stage Race. She finished third in Stage 4 Criterium, her best finish at the event. She moved up to 7th in Final GC Standings at 0
How did Mike Lee perform at Vision Quest? Bryson Perry, a Utahs Guru Racing pro-roadie, finished second. Perry won the race again, this time with a record 68 points.
